Pride and Prejudice
POSTED AT 11:03 PM

I've just recently finished reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Unfortunately for me, I've seen the film even before I read the book, hence I have relied on the actors to provide me how the characters look. I don't, however, mind Mr. Darcy. That I do.

It took quite a while to get the hang of reading the book. Much like Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Austen's prose was far too verbose for the new century. Heavy laden with words that one might not use today, even in their conversations - it took me half-a-day before I was absorbed into the flow of the language. However, it was lyrical, witty and pretty much what one would expect of 19th Century literature.

Here thereto are some of my favorite passages from the novel (Bantam Classics version)
.

"...We must not expect a lively young man to be always guarded and circumspect. It is very often nothing but our own vanity that deceives us. Women fancy admiration means more than it does."
"And men take care that they should."
A conversation between Jane and Elizabeth pp117 -118

"In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."
Mr. Darcy's profession of love towards Elizabeth p162

"Well, my dear," said he, when she ceased speaking, "I have no more to say. If this be the case, he deserves you. I could not have parted with you, my Lizzy, to any one less worthy."
Mr. Bennet to his daughter Elizabeth after hearing her side why she wants to marry Mr. Darcy p324

"I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle even before I knew I had begun."
Mr.Darcy to Elizabeth when asked to account for his ever falling in love with her p327

It was first that I saw Ang Lee's 1995 version of Sense and Sensibility that I have encountered Jane Austen. I was roaring to see the latest Pride and Prejudice after that. Haven't seen Emma and Mansfield Park though, but rest assured I will be scouring dvd stalls for that. Then my dvd-hunt if there was ever one made, of the BBC mini series of Pride and Prejudice where Colin Firth plays Mr. Darcy. If you do know where to find this particular version, please pray tell.

Dare say, I have finally begun my affair with Ms. Jane Austen.

On Children - Kahlil Gibran
POSTED AT 11:39 PM

And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, "Speak to us of Children." And he said:

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.
